now what???

I just placed the order for my first trees. I will be getting 4 Zelkova carpinifolia & 4 Ulmus*hollandica. They will come in 2 3/4 inch pots. Should I repot them in larger pots(how big?) or let them grow for a year? When is a good time to start to wire, prune, pinch, etc.

Re: now what???

I would put them in oversize pots until you have made it through a season and had some experience with watering.

You can find some more info in bonsaiTALK Links ->Beginners and also here in the FAQ. It is much more difficult to maintain a good moisture balance and good drainage in a small container.

Giving any specific advice about styling would depend on what your goals are for the trees. When you receive them, post a photo if you can.

Regards,

Matt

Re: now what???

Thanks Matt.
When you say oversized pots, do you mean one gallon? I'll post some pics when I get them(aprox. 4/17/02).

Re: now what???

About "one gallon" size chopped down a bit in height. *You won't need the full height of the container.

I don't know where they're coming from, but if they haven't leafed out by the time you receive them, you'll have more options, including putting them together in a larger container, forest style until they grow on a bit.

Regards,

Matt

Re: now what???

I am getting them from Evergreen Gardenworks & I hear they're pretty good. How much should I cut off the top? Does it matter what material they'er made of

Re: now what???

Hey!

For what it's worth, I would suggest you grab a few good bonsai books, perhaps from treebay. There are also TONS of articles on the net. But I have found that Bonsai is an art that requires a good bit of knowledge. Not that I have any! But I read all of time, and the only thing I am learning is how very little I know!

Anyway, just a thought!

Capt. Jack
