Exclamation Novice

Does anyone know what kind of bonsai I get seeing as I'm a novice to this art? I bought a Juniper (not sure what kind of Juniper) from the mall (which I read is a sin) from some stand. I heard that Junipers are good starters but I also read that Junipers need a dormant period in the winter. I live in SE TX so I one on and off.

Re: Novice

Take a look at this thread in the Beginner section:

P.S. What does "one on and off" mean?

Regards,

Matt

I think you're just on the southern edge of the junipers natural growth habitat. You are probably in zone 9 which is fine, zone 10 and above is questionable for most junipers. The cold fronts coming through every now and then, as you describe, is enough to keep the tree dormant for a month or two. Most of the mall junipers are juniperus procumbens 'nana' so that's probably what you have.
