Hi all. I'm new to this forum and to bonsai. I've been reading all I can get my eyes on, both online and books from the library. bonsaiTALK has been a big help.
I think I'll be ready to select my first candidates (read victims) this spring. I would also like to try my hand at forest plantings. I have access to reletively inexpensive seedlings but I don't know if any of the species available will be OK for this use. I can get white pine, norway spruce, colorado blue spruce, red pine, sugar maple, redosier dogwood, burr oak, and redbud. The trees will be 12" and smaller in height. Will any of these be suitable for this project or will I be better off finding other species at another source? Thanks |

I do not know about the generalities of those species' growth habits, however if you have seen a forest of those kind of trees, they should work. Alot of trees work as forest plantings (and there is a book called Bonsai Landscapes by Peter Adams you should get/read). Any tree from a Ficus Benjimina to a Trident Maple, to a Spruce or Bamboo works. As longs as you can create an apealing vision to you, it will work.

Hi DLBirks,
In my opinion from the list of trees that you have the best one for a forest planting would be the Norway spruce. The most important thing in a good forest planting is to have all of the trees different sizes as far as diameter and height. This can be difficult with seedlings that are bought from a nursery, the seeds are planted at the same time and thus are the same age . I have found that collecting trees from the woods is a good way to get many different sizes and ages. Ken Last edited by KenDuncan : 13-Feb-2007 at 07:23 AM. |
