Newbie with questions.

Hello all,
I've gotten a bansai tree as a gift and I had a couple of questions regarding the care. First and foremost I don't seem to know what type/breed of bansai tree that I have. Is there any way for a newbie to tell what kinda tree he has. Might be helpful if there is a site showing all the different breeds and characteristics. Second the tree came in a pot that has the top layer of gravel glued on. How do I tell when I should water the roots. The instructions say to water the plant everyday but I don't want to over water. If I were to repot this tree how would i go about this without damaging my tree. Thanks in advance for all replies.

Re: Newbie with questions.

Hi, there are allot of online shows that have tons of pictures you could look through to try to figure out what you have, try: http://www.bonsaiweb.com/show/ How much you need to water really varies on your tree, for instance if you have a bald cypress, that will need more water then if you had a black pine that likes to dry a little before you water again.

The thing with the glued down rocks is: the glue is usually made of 50 percent elmers & 50 percent water when mixed, and when you water it the glue is released and gets in your soil and goes to your roots and promote root rot and cause real damage.

this article might help answer some of your questions http://www.bonsaiweb.com/forum/articles/begin/

and after you figure out what you have, it will probably be in here telling you specifics on how to take care of your tree: http://www.bonsaiweb.com/care/faq/

hope this helps

Re: Newbie with questions.

Bruce, check out pictures of junipers, there's a good chance that is what you have. The main problem with the glued rocks is that they keep the the soil from breathing and make it hard to water correctly. They tend to keep the soil too wet. I doubt that it needs repotting now but I would pry the rocks off the top. When you find out what "species" of tree you have post back for more specific advice.

Tony
