Newbie looking for some pruning advice, chinese elm pics inside!
That's my One year old Chinese elm. I'm thinking about pruning it, to keep the braches closer together, what bits should I lose? Feel tree to hack at it in photoshop to illustrate btw. It's a thumbnail, so the pic can be enlarged, just give it a click. Probably best to avoid if you're a 56k user though! Oh, and so no one worries, that's not where I normally keep it! Thanks for any advice you can give, Matt |

It seems to be matchstick-thin so I would not be worried about pruning it immediately. It really depends on where you want to go with it. It won't get very thick very fast in that pot, but I'd think you'd want it to be at least finger thick and that would take the better part of a decade in that pot. If you trim it for shape it will take 20. So there's the rub.
Regards, Matt

It needs to be planted out to add a little size. In the ground ideally. If you do this, in as little as 3 years, you will have an elm capable of becoming a nice shohin. Just put it in an area where it will be protected, get full sun, and let it grow wild. If you can't put it in the ground, then the next best thing would be a grow box. Do a search on this site to get an idea of what I am talking about. Of course in a grow box it will take longer.
Pruning should not be a consideration at this time, it needs to grow unrestricted to put girth and taper into the trunk.
