Newbie and first tree

Hi all! Does anyone know if Fukien Tea is harmful to pets (cats)?

Second, I am thinking of taking the wiring off of this plant, as I heard that you can pretty much prune it to shape. Please see the pic below. Comments? Any ideas as to the age?

Third, I am keeping a diary of the life and times of the plant (I hope that the diary gets repetitious after a few years: 2010: Another year old.. 2011 another year old..)

Can't answer your question about harmful, but can say it's a nice looking tree. It has a great future. My only suggestion (unasked for but...) would be to keep trimming it back to make sure it gets compact and not to stringy.

I have small forest and I have used the clip and grow method completely and works well on Fukien Tea to get some nice branch direction changes.

Re: Newbie and first tree

Garf,

Sweet tree! I really, really like it.

I don't know anything about the cultivation of fukien tea - I've never had one - so I can't help you there. What I can suggest is that of you keep it indoors, be sure you give it as much sunlight as possible. This - in concert with the pruning that Earl prudently suggests -will help keep the foliage more compact.

As for keeping a book? This is a fantastic idea, and I could not recommend it more highly! I've got a book going back the better part of a decade now with my trees in it, and it's really fun to look back at their beginnings. Be sure to take some photos to put in there as well.

All the best,
Old Mister
