New Boy Needs Help And Advice

Hello everyone

Please help!!

My girlfriend very recently gave me a bonsai as a birthday present, and I'm hoping your combined experience and expertise will prove to be of help to me (1. by not allowing me to destroy my relationship with my girlfriend by ruining the tree and 2 by giving me some basic tips that will enable me to treat the tree with the respect it deserves).

The label that came with the tree states that it is a “Chinese Plum” (Sageritia if my research proves correct).

The problem I have is that I have never really had any interest in horticulture, and especially not in keeping bonsai – thus I have don’t have even the basic knowledge. However, I am determined to see this through and still have a healthy tree for many many years to come. This is where, hopefully, you kind people come in. I will be forever in your debt if you could give me some basic advice and tips regarding, watering, lighting, feeding and positioning. As well as some more advanced tips on pruning and shaping (I’m not sure if that’s the correct term – but please forgive my ignorance).

Please help me. Even the most basic information you can provide will help me, and I do appologise if you have answered these questions before.

Many thanks

Stevie

P.s Is it normal for this type of bonsai to have roots hanging from the bark of the tree itself, and entering the soil?

I think you will find some good basic care information on BCI Species Index under Sageretia

You'll also want to read the ***FAQ*** for basic information about watering and care.

Regards,

Matt

Stevie,
Welcome to the hobby. Just to make sure you get correct advise, you may want to post a picture of the tree. The label could be wrong and you wouldn't want to follow care instructions for Sageretia if it's something else.

Good luck.
