New Bonsai Owner, Think It's a Ficus

Hello everyone! About 4 months ago I recieved a desk plant as a gift from my co-workers. The little plant tag that came in it just said "Bonsai", no genus or species listed. After a little looking around, I am fairly certain it is a ficus, but I am unsure of the species.

This will of course be an indoor plant, the only other experience I have with indoor plants is Orchids. I do know that they need time to adjust to a new home, which is why I waited a few months before looking into ways I could prune and shape it.

I honestly know nothing about caring for a ficus, it has been watered once a week, first thing monday morning for the past 4 months. If anyone can provide some basic care tips such as feeding, pruning, and such, or perhaps a good website that would be great.

The tree looks like its about ready to be repotted, I checked the roots and there are a few starting to grow around the pot, but I need to break up those glued down stones first. :/

Heres a few pictures, Let me know what you think!

Also, In that first picture, it looks like there were 2 large branches, possibly the main trunk, that were cut off. Is this going to prevent the trunk from ever growing further?

G'day Prog...

Looks like you have a pretty good starter there...

Let's see if we can help...

"...certain it is a ficus, but I am unsure of the species...". It is a Ficus...Retusa I believe...AKA Gensing...and other names.

"...This will of course be an indoor plant...". Yes, it is a so called "indoor" plant, however, all this means is that it will adapt better to indoor life. When weather allows, your bonsai will be healthier and happier if it gets some outdoor time...the more the better. In the mean time, while indoors...to keep it healthy and happy, it needs LOTS OF LIGHT, and air movement.

"...they need time to adjust to a new home...". Ficus do react to being moved...it's common for them to drop leaves.

"...it has been watered once a week...". Watering once a week may be good.
Or not. You should water your bonsai only when it needs water...and then, water it thoroughly...until water runs through the drain holes. Water from the top and if the water runs through immediately, that means there is a problem with the soil...we will have to deal with that.

"...need to break up those glued down stones...". Remove those rocks, as soon as possible...they can create all kinds of problems. Fill the space left by removing the rocks with something like pea sized pumice or lava rock, or pea gravel.

Repotting can be done almost any time...as long as the bonsai is healthy and happy. That's another subject...for another time.

Hope this helps, Prog...keep in touch...

Pat
