New Bonsai

Today I bought a "starter kit" for a bonsai that included a pot, screens and wire. I got a "Olea Little Olive" tree.

It's looks like this:

How to I get it to look like this?

To be more specific, why does mine look like a bush and not a tree?

Despite picture size, my bonsai is about 3" tall max. The other one is like 10" tall. Will it kill my bonsai to prune the lower branches to make the trunk appear larger?

Any tips for a newbie? I also got some copper wire in the starter kit. Any guides to wiring?

Thanks much,

-Joe

Does the place where you bought the starter kit have any info about a bonsai club that meets in your area? If so, get the contact info and attend a meeting. Most clubs allow you to go to one or more meetings for free before deciding to join. Bring your tree with you to get some advice.

I assume you are keeping it indoors for now. It will grow faster and more vigorously if you put it outside as soon as the weather warms up. It looks like your tree is an olive and they are a Mediterranian species which means they like warm, sunny weather. Fertilize it when it begins to grow and it will reach the height of the tree you want to emulate the coming growing season. The wire in your kit can be used to bring the lower branches down but it isn't best to try to explain how to wire verbally; it really needs to be watched to learn it well especially for a beginner. That is why a club is an important resource just starting out. Lots of "hands-on" learning opportunities.
