need advice
I bought a Juniper procumbens nana last summer, and I am about ready to start its training. *As I am relatively new to this, I'm not sure which way this plant should go. *Its in a 1 gal nursery pot, and has been grown staked up. *It goes up about 24 inches, and at the top of the stake it has a 90 degree bend and goes out about 16 inches. *Also, all of the long branches are growing on one side. *I have a few books, and read all I can on the web, but am still a little nervous about killing this thing! *Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance! |

Re: need advice
If you could take a photograph of your tree and post it here, it would be very helpful in providing you with specific advice.
In general, most bonsai will be between 12 and 24 inches, so you would probably be safe in removing the portion above that height. Wait until spring when the growing begins, before you remove the top. Next you'll want to study the tree from all angles and see where the trunk line and rootage looks most impressive to you. If you can't find the front, consider that you may be able to locate "the back!" It may be necessary to thin the growth somewhat in order to be able to see into the tree and appreciate its structure. Most clubs are receptive to new members and have hands-on sessions where you can get some experienced one-on-one help with your juniper. Regards, Matt

Re: need advice
I don't currently have a simple way of posting a pic yet. But hopefully sometime soon, if my wife will let me go shopping! I had thought about hacking the top off, but wasn't too sure. I really do appreciate the advice. I'll wait another month or two then give it a shot. What should I do about all the major growth on side?
Thanks again! |

Re: need advice
Johnny,
Pro-nanas are great material to work with. I f I had that puppy I would cut the top at the 24 inch mark. Then you must pick off all little sprouts on the trunk and any dead and old needles. Next you have to pick branches to keep. Im sure you know about left right back repeat, etc. Now dont take off the lowest branch. It may be as low as the soil line. The reason is the nanas will never thicken at the base if you cut everything off up to the customary one third height of the trunk. leave this branc on as a sacrifice branch to continue the thickening of the trunk. After the first flush of growth in the spring give it a hard pinch. This will start to devolope your pads of foilage. When it starts to grow again in the summer use your fingers to pinch off and on all summer. It will just get better with time. The trick is to never let it go to long with out a nipping. Now go and but 10 more and repeat!
