my red maple's sick...help! i'm new and loving it!

i'm extremely extremely new to bonsai...i mean like last week i just started, but i'm so excited to get started. well, i'm growing my brother's newly started red maple. it doesn't look to good, cause there is some brown parts where the leaf meets the stem...it may be that my it wasn't watered enough? i have no idea, but i need help, cause i don't want to kill it...thanks for everything...e

Hi Erin,

Would you perchance have a way of postinga closeup picture of one of the brown leaves? That might help us guess what is wrong.

Re: my red maple's sick...help! i'm new and loving

i don't have a pic, or one available that i can put online...i'm not that far along technologically. i can try and describe it a little better though: right where the veins meet at the base of the leaf, in between each vein is a small section of what looks like burned, or dried out portions of leaf. in some spots it's even ripped a bit, or missing. it's not very large, and not noticeable if ones not looking closely, which is why i think my mother may have overlooked it. i hope that helps a little bit. sorry

Erin,

Where have you been keeping the tree? In full sun? Partial sun? What part of the country do you live in, and how hot has it been lately?

Do you water in the middle of the day, or at night?

Re: my red maple's sick...help! i'm new and loving

Well, thank you both for your input. The pics of the maple leaves are not like my plant...those are more of a pink hue, mine are brown...
I live in Connecticut. My mother had the tree for about two-three weeks before I knew it and took over. She kept it inside, partial sun, and watered it every couple days. Now I've moved it outside, and water it late afternoon, early evening. It's very small, just has three leaves on it, if that can help you any...Thanks again, hope we can work together to keep it alive I'll keep you posted, and do my best to get pics online.

the temperature lately has been very nice, although the past two days were extremely humid, and warm (97, and 80+). today it began to rain...i took the tree inside for the downpours, but now it's just raining slightly, and it's sheltered by my two huge maples in the yard, so only getting sprinkled. i hope to hear from you soon, thanks e

Could it be [i:fbe2fc9df9]Acer rubrum[/i:fbe2fc9df9]? Fact sheet with pics

If not, does the foliage have a dark red color through the season? Then it could be a variety of [i:fbe2fc9df9]Acer platanoides[/i:fbe2fc9df9], 'Royal Red', for example. Fact sheet with pics

Re: my red maple's sick...help! i'm new and loving

it's leaves are a dark purplish red, but now that it's been outside for about a week, i'm seeing green blotches on the leaves. my goal is to get a pic of it up for you to see by the end of this weekend, thanks...e
