my "Official" USDA Zone Designation
I know this is basic stuff, but I could use a couple hardiness zone tips.
I assume this refers to the minimum temps you receive? Is that all it is? Is it averages? Basic descrip appreciated. I live in South Orange County-Ca, San Juan Capistrano. Based on charts like the one below, I'd say I'm in zone 10a, w/ minimum annual temps dipping to [approx] 35-30 deg. F. Is there a web site or way to get the "official" designation for my zone. I get the jest from these charts, but I'm sure there is some proper designation based on exact locale. Just another rookie Q (actually, I had to make a thread so I'd stop starin' at all those pics on Al's SoCAl tour folder). [img:d3ec37575e]http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/images/zones77.jpg[/img:d3ec37575e] btw- 3 years ago I moved here after 20 years in San Clemente (5 miles down the road but on the beach), both places would probably map out as the same zone but the [micro] climates are way different, 5 miles from the beach I get 10-15 degrees hotter/colder. thanx |

Re: my
The way I understand it is they are the minimum or coldest winter temperatures averaged over at least a 10 year period. It doesn't mean it can't get colder but they are used to show what your normal winter temps will be like. It doesn' have anything to do with summer highs either, wich is another consideration when choosing plants and trees for your area. *Here's a USDA map at the link.
