i bought a catlin elm not so long back and some of my leaves have....well grown.....alot.
There are some that are in proportion to the size of the tree but the ones towards the ends of the tips are gigantic.

I was wondering whether anybodys got any tips to keep their size down

Thanx

Re: my leaves are big:(

You could try too feed with a lower nitrogen fertiler, and try a leaf cutting in mid to late summer after growth has hardened.

Where is your tree located?

Leaf size can be influenced by the amount of light and water the plant receives, the size of the container, and the level of soil fertility. It can also be affected by the number of leaves present.

Defoliating in the summer by plucking away the large leaves at the apex and exterior of the tree will result in more, smaller leaves growing back.

Moving the plant into stronger sun, reducing the irrigation somewhat, or reducing the frequency of repotting and fertilization will also produce smaller leaves.

Sometimes rank growth can be triggered by events like heavy pruning or repotting.

Re: my leaves are big:(

A lot of elms are sold as (Catlin). True catlin elm leaves never get larger than 3/8 inch even if the tree grows wild for a season. They are a true genetic sport. If you get leaves larger than a 1/2 inch, you probably just have a chinese elm. The leaves of the catlin are very dark green, and you can pick the trees out in a group of reg. chinese elms.

Can you pick out the Catlin elms in this forest?

Re: my leaves are big:(

Fat Trunk: It sounds to me like you either have a drake elm or your catlin is in a growing container. Either way your best solution is pruning. Look at your tree and pay close atten. to the base of the new leaders. You will observe that the first two leaves are very small and will most often be on oppisite sides of the leader. If you cut back to these first two leaves you will drasticly reduce the size of the leaves on your elm because these leaves will not increase in size. You can also direct the growth of your limb by cutting in front of the leaf that points in the direction that you want your limb to grow in. Take your time and try to cut every new leader on the tree, it will look bare but will rebud quickly. This pinching is done threw out the growing season and you will get your real reward in the next spring when your elm will explode with a profusion of new buds, with much smaller leaves, also many hard wood buds if your tree is healthy. Good luck and I hope that this helps.....ripsgreentree
