My first time here!

Hey everybody, I just found this site through google.com and after looking around for a while I decided to register here. My first incursion into bonsai a few years ago ended in disaster (some kind of bug got into it and killed it) but yesterday, after doing some researching, I went to a nursery near my house and fell in love with what I think is a weeping fig. Although im not 100% positive.

So I just wanted to say hi and tell you guys what an awsome forum you've got going here!

-Stephen

Oh, and if you've got any tips for a beginner like me i'd be happy to hear 'em!

Welcome, Stephen! It's pretty great here, all right! Here's a link to an article I wrote to help newbies get a jump start on learning here on the forum, and on the web:

Figs are good trees, hardy and responsive. Good luck!

Welcome Stephen.

You may be encouraged to know that just about everyone encounters disaster at the getgo. There's so much to know about bonsai, the learning never stops.

I suggest you take a look through the gallery for some inspiration. Oh, and we're even in the midst of a styling contest!

Hi Stephen, Welcome to what is in my opinion the best bonsai site on the internet. My suggestion would be to read, read some more, and then read even more. There is a lot to learn but there is also a lot of info available to help you if you search for it. If you need an answer to a specific question there are many members here who may help you.

Thanks for all the advice guys! oh and Joanie thats a great article thanks!

Im really interested in doing cuttings of my tree. Theres some overgrown places and im thinking I could maybe propagate some trees? My idea was to have multiple trees in one large pot. Is that feasible for somone who is new or should I wait a while before I attempt it?

thanks again!

Stephen:

Ficus are very easy to propagate from cuttings.

Also, group plantings are very popular. Click here for forest plantings at the bonsaiTALK gallery
go for it!

Hello there, welcome to the hobby, for a suggestion I'd say try to build on what you already have experience of, try to find out what that 1st. tree of yours died from, learn as much as you can, find out where things went wrong, and it will build your confidence. Let's here from you soon!

Well come to the forums, I'm pretty new here, I think I've been here for about a month and a half and it's a good place to be, there plenty of information here and tons to share. I would say that it's your best bet to do a lot of reading and look at a lot of pictures to develop your own personal style and taste. If you have the resources, I would suggest you buy John Naka's Bonsai Techniques I and II, and D. Koreshoff's Art and Science of Bonsai if you can find it. I found Koreshoff's book at my University Library and its great, Naka's books which I purchased have been great help too. I think at this points the most you can do is read and learn, don't be too anxious to do too much or you'll pay for it, literally in dead trees
