Which method to start Bonsai?
Dear all,
I have just started Bonsai, and it seems to me that there is a few methods of creating a Bonsai. 1) To grow a tree in a small pot, pruning, etc. as it grows. 2) To grow a tree from seed, in a big pot, and when its trunk is thick enough, put it in a small pot. 3) To buy a tree that has been growing for a few years, so its trunk is begginning to thicken, then to prune it back a lot, put it in a small pot, and the new growth will create the appearance of the tree in its natural state, just on a smaller scale. My question is this. Is any one method more correct/successful than the other? Any posts to clarify this would be appreciated. |

Re: Which method to start Bonsai?
Bren `1,
All the methods you describe will work to make a suitable bonsai. The differance being "your" patiance level. If you can wait, many people find it suitable to start from seed so they have more control. Other people may find a really nice nursery plant and are able to make a nice bonsai in a few hours. Growing out small stock in containers is done by every nurseryman in the US. This will also yeild suitable stock. You might think about starting your collection in varying phases of growth. Start some seed now for the future. Buy some small junipers at the nursery to practise with. And finally, spend a few dollars on a nice plant with some potential. This will give you some variation in size to prune on and will keep you from becoming bored as you collection grows. Seems I always need something to prune on. Good luck in your future bonsai, Bonsaial

Bren,
*Bonsai Al Nailed it! * I am suprised though that you left out the one most people think is the only option, that is to buy a "finished" bonsai at Walmart, or the mall. * * I think you are on the right path and I'm proud of you for starting out this way. *It is much funner in the long run to grow them up your self!

Tanks Bonzaial and Bonsainut! As a beginner your comments were helpful to me as well especially about having something to prune. My wife thinks Nipper is the appropriate name for me as she protects all her plants from my enthusiasm.

Re: Which method to start Bonsai?
After u try that... Try some air layering. I have been lucky in finding a 'part' of a living tree that is already Bonsai-Like in appearance, and removing it safely with the Air Layering. It is alot easier than it seems, and you could get a nice tree impatiently.
