Maple Trunk Chop

I have a 5' trident maple in my garden with about a 3" trunk and am wanting to do a trunk chop this spring (I live in Australia).

a few questions:

I can not see any buds below the point I want to chop (about 7 inches from ground), what are the chances of buds forming?

The tree seems to have been grafted as nursery stock, how will this affect the chop?

Thanks for your time!

I don't think a trident would be grafted under any ordinary circumstances, so unless it is some special cultivar, it is probably ungrafted. The chances of getting buds are excellent - you want to seal the wound, though.

Regards,

Matt

Hmm, actually I'm not sure on what cultivar it is...all I can say is that it is a maple and that it is green!

It's definetly grafted, so how will this affect the trunk chop? will the chop need to be performed much higher than where it was grafted?

thanks for your reply
