maple?

Last Christmas I was given a Maple? bonsai and the giver was told by the seller that it was an indoor tree. It came with instructions re: watering, feeding etc. it was fine for about 6 months but since then has shed its leaves 3 times each time new leaves have appeared almost straight away, but this last time it has only recovered some leaves. Should I do anything other than water as normal. By the way I live in Sussex England.

Re: maple?

Odvell, I am not an expert but you either do not have a maple or if it is a maple it is surely not a house plant. Maples must be kept outdoors. Yes they can come in (for very short times) for display. Bring it to a shop that can tell you the tree type for sure or photo the tree and place the picture on this site for ID. There are many helpful people here...just need more info

Re: maple?

Your maple needs to be in a cool low light environment this time of year [between 25 and 50 degrees F.] That will cause it to go dormant and give it a needed rest. Next spring put it outside in morning sun and it should recover.

Re: maple?

Od,
I am sorry you got bad advice. Retailers are ruining our hobby all around the globe with their quick buck mentality. I agree with Jay and Tony on future care and just hope it has the strength to make it through to spring!

Re: maple?

Thanks for the advice, I will try to find out forsure if tree is a maple, in the meantime I will keep it in the same place as last winter where is seemed quite happy. One other query, should I remove the moss that has grown on the compost?.

Re: maple?

I would take the moss off and put it in a seperate pot. A thick moss carpet can keep air and water from the soil and keeps it wet too long. It's usually not a big problem on healthy trees but your tree sounds stressed already so it doesn't need anything else to cope with.
