Question Lighting: What's a Lux?

Ive searched throughout google and this site.

How much are "lux" equal to? (for lighting)

What kind of lighting would I need for just 800 lux?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A bright room in your house but not in direct sunlight is about that 800 lux.

This article may be helpful.

I don't worry much about lux. For most of us, 2-4 4 foot fluorescent tubes as close as possible to the trees does a nice job. Note that lux is a function of distance from the light source. Thus, the most powerful light you can buy "up on the ceiling" may not deliver as many (?) lux to the plant as a fourescent up close and personal.

Don't bother with "grow" lights, unless you are growing flowers or fruit. The noonday sun type fluorescents promote small leaves and close internodes. Cheaper, too!

Thanks for the help from everyone. I ask this because im using a mame kingsville as a "mini bonsai." I plan to keep it in my room where I might need a little bit of extra lighting other than the window.

So i guess ill go and pickup a small fluorescent in case i need it due to a non-sunny window.

Thanks again

The amount of lux is dependant upon the light output in lumens of the lamp and the floor area of the room. A 5 foot fluorescent lamp ( 5000 lumens ) used in a room measuring 4metres x 5 metres will give a about 200 lux. The lighting in a normal living room is about 100 lux. An office about 500 lux, daylight is in the thousands of lux depending upon the cloud cover
