Planting in pots outside is a good way to go. That's how I start most of the seed I collect locally but of course I never have to worry about them sprouting in winter. In your area it's not likely to kill the trees even if they do sprout early but they may languish for awhile until temps really warm up . I think your main consideration is the species you choose. If it's one that needs cold sratification then it may not be cold enough outside. Like Matt said, it doesn't cost too much to experiment. You may want to plant some in pots outside and put some in the fridge over winter.
