Re: Large Boxwood should i chop it
Yes I think you should cut it back.
Right now you have just a little taper and a little movement. If you let it grow you will have no taper and no movement. I would leave some trunk above the first branch on the right. The first branch on the left doesn't look very useful as it has no taper and a big sweeping arc. Regards, Matt

Re: Large Boxwood should i chop it
I would leave a bit of a stub, maybe 2" on the lefthand side branch and whittle it down a bit to a point, trying to add some interest
Boxwood will heal, but it's a slow process. The wood is very hard. It's used to carve chess pieces, so don't break your tools on it. Either saw it off, use a large pair of garden pruners to cut it, or better yet, some of the jumbo bonsai tools we have over at TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies in the branch cutters section. A regular pair of concave cutters won't do it. For the top branch, I think I would leave a bit more than you've shown here. You could treat it in a similar way, and if you don't like it, you can always cut or saw it off. Regards, Matt

Re: Large Boxwood should i chop it
The cut point on the side branch looks fine. I think you might want to cut just a bit higher on the vertical trunk. Ideally you'd have a small branch coming forward to cut&whittle back to. It looks like you have one in the back, but that may be a too-abrupt change in caliper and point the wrong way. Cut just a little higher and see if something doesn't pop down lower before you carve the top.
But you can go ahead and cut & carve the side! Regards Matt
