Well that brings up another question... go figure...newbs...
Will a trunk with no taper ever develop taper? I kind of thought that the base/nebari of a tree would thicken with age. Or is it all porportional? I've found some japanese maples with great nebari but poker staight trunks, under one inch dia trunk, no taper, and branches starting three feet up the tree... Trees like those are best left alone? |

As the root crown grows, the base will fill out. If you get it going radially, it will spread out quite a bit. That won't contribute to taper above the root crown much, though. That needs to be achieved by cutting back or growing sacrificial limbs to increase the flow of sap through the lower trunk, relative to the upper trunk.
If you want mammoth tapering maple trunks, look to trident maples, which are sturdy, fast growers. A. japonica and the Korean maples here are much more delicate by nature. Regards, Matt
