Question Kingsville Boxwood Styling

Hi,

Just got this japanese kingsville boxwood from Home Depot for $8 and it's overgrown; roots sticking out from every hole of the pot. Much bigger than its siblings that were in nearby pots. I'm at Tampa, Florida.

The trunk is just about 1" at the bottom, and the tree's highest point is about 18" from the soil.

Any ideas on the best way to style it? When to repot?

Thanks in advance,

Jose

Repot in spring. Here is my first attempt at a virtual. Dont know about the pot color but I figured this would make a good style if you wanted to start shaping next spring.

You should consider what you like about the tree already and what of it you want to keep. Next think about where pruning scars are going to be and whether or not that will affext your design. Then sketch a model of what you would like, your perfect vision for the tree. It is hard to style the tree if you don't know what you want it to look like. If you really want to start cutting though, I think it would be safe for you to start attacking all those upright branches and the bar branches

Good luck

Are you sure that one is a Kingsville? I think that looks more like a more common variety like a Korean or Chinese...and I've never seen a Kingsville at a Home Depot. Now that doesn't mean it couldn't happen, just not likely.

A Kingsville has smaller and more dense foliage even without pruning and pinching.

Take a look at what I mean..

I jacked this image from this page hope they don't mind.

The label says "Japanese Boxwood"; for some reason I thought japanese = kingsville. Now doing some searching I found that they are different species. Sorry.

Japanese Boxwood = Buxus japonica
Kingsville Boxwood = Buxus microphylla 'Compacta': dwarf boxwood
(more species = http://www.bonsaiweb.com/care/faq/suitable.cgi?25 )

Thanks

Well,

Here is my virtual; it is similar to yours zen, but I want to make this tree give the impression of a taller tree...

Using the "front" picture:
1. Took a couple of branches off from the left of the trunk (red)
2. Lowered by about 30 degree a primary brach (blue)
3. Reduced foliage from the top (red)
4. Increased foliage at lower branches

Any ideas, is this a good start?

Definitely not a Kingsville, but still a nice tree potential.

If you don't "clean out" the interior of the tree you will have a lot of die off later on.

Boxwoods can take a lot of pruning but always leave at least two sets of leaves on each branch. Identify the main branches you wish to keep then go from there with the smaller ones.

Good luck, ...Hector

Question Gingko Style? Can you cut a wedge on a branch of a boxwood?

Some feedback so far:
1. A virtual from zen
2. ID not a kingsville, but a Japanese Boxwood (like the label says by Repotter
3. Clean the interior by Repotter (I will do)
4. Keep what you like, get reed of what you don't by Soonamy

The Style:

Gingko Style Boxwood

What should I do?:

I think that as a first step for my boxwood I would try to make it as close as this particular boxwood (charles). To do this I would have to take a couple of lower small branches off, and cut a wedge on one of the thee branches (or trunks?) that start at about one inch from the dirt level.

Is this something I can do? can I cut a wedge and then bring this branch down about 25 degree?

(this picture is from bonsaial1's post)

Thanks
