Just Wondering

I have a pine seedling, it is a foot high and looks kinda like a small christmas tree. My question is all over its trunk is covered in needles, do I pluck them off or what? I'm asking because I want to wire the trunk.

Re: Just Wondering

Yes, you can remove most of the needles on the trunk and base of the branches. Leave some in promising positions, because dormant buds lie in the needle clusters, which can later form into new branches.

If you do not pluck needles from trunks and branch bases, you will find you get more branching exactly where you don't need it!

Regards,

Matt

Hi!

Keep in mind that these sprouts will eventually turn into branches if left untouched. So look long and hard, and decide where you might like to have branches. Don't beat yourself up if you take something off, then say, "Oh crap, I needed that!" It'll grow back!

Re: Just Wondering

Listen to Jack in the post above! One of my "almost" nicest bonsai is a beautiful black pine that I styled in a workshop. The instructor had us pluck off all the old needles. Four years later, very little back budding. I have been beating myself up thinking I'm doing something wrong. I may be but I'm also beginning to wonder if that plucking took off the buds.

Go carefully and will end up with a great tree.
