Juniperus in Rain

We have just suffered one of the worst winters ever up here in Canada and it is finally getting hotter out. I am planning to put my Juniperus out side for the first time (bought it during winter couldn't winterize it) and was wondering my forecast calls for substantial amounts of rain in the next couple days, should I put it out or will this give it root rot. Alos what do I do when there are days were all it dose is rain? In my bonsai book there is a picture of someone who made a make shift overhang so the harsh weather wouldn't kill the bonsai. Is this necessary? If not what should I do?

Its really going to depend on how well your soil drains. If there is ANY possiblility that it doesnt drain fast enough, err on the side of caution and set it somewhere out of the worst of the rain, but where it gets as much sun as possible. We get huge amounts of rain here, but its actually spread out so that we dont get much HEAVY rain. I have been keeping my 'drownable' plants (including a few junipers I have recently repotted) on my covered porch, where they get full morning sun, shaded mid-day, and some late afternoon sun, but I can control the amount of water they get. Whatever you do, keep an eye on it, and make sure its not drowning.

G'day Skater...

As Maryjane said, if your soil drains fast enough...and you should be using a fast draining soil...you shouldn't have a problem...Maryjane has given good advice.

However, one thing she didn't mention...well two things...give you bonsai protection if the rain starts washing the soil out of it's pot...and, make sure that the pot is not sitting in water...constantly wet roots is the primary cause of root rot. As long as the water drains through...should be OK.
