Juniper Back Budding

Hi Greggles, TreeBay is right. Some junipers bud back better than others, but I don't know a any varieties that I would try cutting back to a stump. Also, don't try the 90% cut back at the wrong time of year. If it is very early spring or late winter, you can prune hard. And be sure to take off an equal amount of root too. Root and foliage need to be balanced. Then put it into an area where it only gets morning sun and lots of shade, for a couple of weeks, until you see new growth. I would use Super Thrive in the water too, or some other tonic. When you see new growth, put it back out in full sun. I recently found a huge parsoni Juniper in a 30 gallon container at a landscape nursery. The reason I bought it was because there was new small growth popping out on the trunk and lower branches.....not common on this variety of juniper. The juniper that tends to bud back the best on old wood, in my experience, is the nana juniper. What ever variety you have, timing is real important. If it is past early spring where you are, just a light trim and bud pinching..... If it's worth messing with, it's worth the wait.......much success to you.
