Question Japanese Black Pine Seedling

I have a Japanese Black Pine sapling that I think is 2 to 3 years old. Can it trained for the Bonsai Art?

The short answer is yes. However, some patience will be required. It may take 4-7 years of growth and training.

Search the forums for "Japanese Black Pine"

Check out this link for some guidance regarding growing Japanese Black Pine from 1 to 2 year old seedlings.

JBP can be one of the most difficult to work with let alone as a beginner, I am not saying don't try but know what you are up against. By the way 4-7 years is just going to be the early stages, think long term.

Also try this link, Brent has some great articles. http://www.bonsaitalk.com/lug/link_...hp?link=11&c=59

Your location is one good thing you have going for you. We have a great growing season here in Florida. Our weather is as good, if not better for the growth of JBP than California, Oregon or Washington. One tip - plant in fast draining soil and water often. They don't mind our afternoon showers or daily (twice daily if needed) watering as long as the soil drains well.

Be aware that Florida has a nematode issue and that planting these in ground may not be the best idea - they damage the roots and can kill a pine over a few years. If you have doubt as to the presence of nematodes in your area contact your local agriculture extension office and ask about them and JBP.

Normally I say anything north of Gainesville is Georgia but I'll make an exception for you.
