Re: i've got a palm tree looking bonsai

I'd be using my spider senses, but it sounds like a Cycad. The Sago Palm, or Cycas revoluta is a common example.

I have a Mexican Fan Palm in a bonsai container, but it is kind of a novelty, with huge leaves about the size of the pot.

Regards,

Matt

Re: i've got a palm tree looking bonsai

nope doesn't seem like that one. i guess it looks like a palm tree trunk, but it has just single shoots as leaves.. nothing branches off them.

it was a cheap-o sort of thing, but i went to the bonsai specialty shop today and went for a new tray, and wound up w/ wire, new sheers, soil, a new pot, and a new "firethorn" plant.

geez.. maybe i shouldn't go there so much!

that's the one... it was pretty cheap, so it'll just give me something to practice on..

the leaves if i can call them that seem to big for the plant...

can you trim these back? or will they just die?

Re: i've got a palm tree looking bonsai

The leaves are just very long. I've seen them much longer than this on some big plants. The edges are also very sharp if I recall correctly. So watch out for papercuts from the foliage.

You might try trimming them. Some palms will accept this, but usually you get a 1/8 - 1/4" brown bit at the end, that forces you to trim a bit more, and so on...

Regards,

Matt

so i probably shouldn't start cutting them back should i??

what about fertilizer? does it need it? i read that they don't require a lot of maintainence.

Re: i've got a palm tree looking bonsai

Those Ponytail palms don't need a lot of anything, except good drainage and sunshine. Treat it like a succulent. Don't overwater or expose to frost and maybe the occasional shot of a balanced fertilizer when it warms up.

Regards,

Matt
