Travel I need new dirt.

I like to keep it simple.
I find these tree smilies creepy.....

Anyway, I need new dirt for my Bonsai.
I boiled the rocks (After having the tree for five months... Didn't do it for my last one that died. =C ), and now I need to change the dirt, because I was instructed to do so in spring. Plus, my mom says it's like a brick, so I'm figuring a 'fluff and buff' day for my Bonsai's in order. In addition to a name.....

Any dirt recommendations? I'm in the Chicagoland area, so any stores are a BIG help.
Tools are needed too, we have a Hori-Hori knife (The Clingon dagger, as my dad calls it), and any other garden tool one could imagine...

Also, since I'm kind of an idiot with some things (WHAT? You DRAIN the potatoes BEFORE you mash them?!?!), instructions would be nice.

Should I prune the roots? How much/if I even should would be going the extra mile, but I don't need that much and I probably could find that myself.

Any help is appreciated.

An avatar like that and you think the treesmilies are creepy? woof.

As to soil, the issue has been discussed to death. Instead of repeating the same stuff, I will invite you to get autodidactical and read a few good threads on the subject.

As to pruning the roots, yes you should ... if they need it. Posting pix of the tree might help.
