How to identify trees?

Hi!

I have a lot of trees that I can't identify. Most are in LARGE grow boxes, so I cannot schlep them to my closest nursery for an ID. Does anyone know of a database of leaf pictures that may help me narrow down my search?

Thanks!

Re: How to identify trees?

Jack. Why Schlep the trees, and for sure why cut off a branch? Here is a solution that will solve two (or more) issues. Take pictures of your trees! Digital is best but roll film works also. If it digital you can show us your trees for help. If its roll film you can have it developed and placed on a CD by many developing services, or you could scan the hard picture. The additional benefits are..... 1- you have a history photo of the tree on date x. You will be able to see its progress. 2- You can (or you can have others) do vertuals of where the tree should go in the future. 3- Every year (or more often) you can compare the pictures of the tree and its progress.

I find asking help as to the 'type' of tree is better than trying to pick it out of a book!

Just my thoughts.....

Re: How to identify trees?

Jack: Here is a web page from Origon State University that may help. //osu.orst.edu/dept/idplants/ This is a very large data base and has very good pictures of leaf structure with good descriptions hope that this helps.

Re: How to identify trees?

Jack: If it were me I would cut off a leaf and take it to your nursery for ID.

Re: How to identify trees?

Or if you have a scanner, you could scan a page of leaves and test us. That would be fun.

Regards,

Matt
