Help identifying maple?
Hi there!
This'll be my first post to this message board. I've found the topics here incredibly informative and thought provoking in regards to how I'd like to develop bonsai as a hobby for myself. I'm writing because I'm having trouble identifying this maple we've got in our backyard (photo taken sometime late September last year), which we planted 3-4 years ago, and which has grown to over 7' tall and 6' across. The foliage is usually green up until late August/early September and as it is, it's already got an incredible amount of seeds growing all over the place. ![]() Any idea what sort of maple this might be? And do you think trying to cultivate it as a bonsai would work? Any help you can provide in this regard would be much appreciated! |

It looks kinda like an Amur maple, Acer ginnala. Their leaves are similar to a Trident maple's, but a little bigger.
According to Harry Tomlinson, Acer ginnala is a good substitute for Tridents if you are in an area that is too harsh for Tridents. If you do a simple web search, you should find quite a bit of info on them. Regards, John
