In-ground bonsai?

I was up on a utility pole in an exclusive part of San Francico many years ago and saw a stone..pot?..with a scatered bonsai forest in it. It was about six feet long and two feet wide, curved down at the center with a small lake there. A stream fed the lake from one end. I dont remember what kind of ground cover it had but it was green.

My question is, if the trees were planted in the dirt how did they stay bonzai? Were they in pots buried in the dirt or were they taken out often and trimmed?

Well first I would type in "forest bonsai" into the search feature on the tool bar of this site and then scan those articles and threads. That would give you key words to search to learn even more. I would also type those same words you find into a search engine like google.

I have tried those but Iv never seen small, individualy placed trees in 12 sqare feet of dirt.

Does anybody have an A in this Q&A forum on how they could have done what I saw?

The quick answer is.... it depends...

Where the trees in the ground on a full time basis? is so, they are not Bonsai. Bonsai must be in a pot.

Where the trees in the ground for the winter season? and then they come out with their pot? Yes this would be a bonsai forest.

Are the trees in the ground so as to have them grow, trees grow much quicker in the ground. In this case they are not now bonsai but are being trained as bonsai.

This is obviously a quick and not complete answer. You will be much better served by reading and learning!!

my 2 cents

It was winter, the trees were about 12-16 inches tall and they looked like mature trees.

I saw them in 1971 and was first time I'd seen bonsai trees. From the vantage point on the pole I got a bit of a shock because it felt like being back in Vietnam riding in a helicopter. It was a beautiful piece of landscaping.

Thank you both for your time. It seems the best way to get a definite answer is to try it.

Winters in SF are not cold enough for someone to need burial of pots for protection. Most likely this was their "Japanese Garden" and the trees were either bonsai with pots buried or former bonsai planted into the ground. This can be done in a manner that will keep them smaller like bonsai.

It had to be one or the other. If you would give me the name of the planting style that keeps them small I can start playing.

G'day Orestis...and the rest of us...

Correct me if I'm wrong, Orestis, but "a stone..pot?..." to me, doesn't sound like a "...bonsai planted into the ground...". More like a "rock of many pockets"...whether man-made or natural..., the the bonsai with soil either, contained in the pocket or in a pot, which is in the pocket. Pocket, container, vis-a-vis a pot.

In either case, the bonsai planted in a pocket, or in a pot that's in a pocket, would have to be maintained as any bonsai...in order to continue to be a true bonsai.

Here I go rambling again, says the Ol' Sage.
