Question Green trunk and soil

I have some kind of green algae or mold growing on the trunk and soil of my Chinese elm. It doesn't appear to be hurting anything, but it's certainly ugly. Any suggestions on what's causing it/how to get rid of it?

The plant lives outdoors in a very warm sunny spot, the soil is lava rock mixed with standard-issue potting soil, roughly 50/50 by volume, watered about every other day, fed about once a week with a weak miricle-gro solution.

Hi Glipoth!

there could be a few things causing the problem, my advice would be to use a copper based fungalside spray.. and give it a spray (at regular intervals, through the weeks ahead)
I would also use a tooth brush and gently brush off all algea, from the trunk..

I would feed every 2 weeks, and make sure your soil is free draining (making sure that its not holding to much mosture in the soil) what i do is to put a bit of mixed soil in a pot and water, see if it drains through the holes at the bottom (within twenty seconds ) if it does its fine, if not, I add some more grit... till i get it right...

hope's this helps, take care Lance..

This isn't a problem. It's quite natural and something that doens really require any treatment. If it bothers you, get a soft nyulon toothbrush and gently scrub it off. Spraying fungicides, bleaches or other stuff can harm you tree avoid them for small things like this.
