Got a Bonsai, but what kind is it?

Hello!

I just got my first Bonsai, and am trying to find out what kind exactly it is. Comparing the shape of the leafs with an A-Z Bonsai species table, I would say it is a Japanese Cedar.
But the book says that these Bonsais are tall and skinny, where mine is rather short and wide.
Did I find the correct kind? And is the shape just the way my Bonsai was grown?
Here is a pic of the Bonsai:

and here the leaf:

Thank you for any help!

Hi Holger,

This is a Chinese Garden Juniper, [i:acd39c39d2]Juniperus chinesis procumbens 'nana'[/i:acd39c39d2] Sometimes also called Chinese Juniper or Green Mound Juniper.

This picture is very good in identifying the plant, and I'm sure it will be useful to future forum visitors.

Welcome to the forum,

Matt

Just a guess from a rookie, but looks like a Juniper Procumens Nana. Could be wrong.

Thank you for the fast reply!
This kind was unfortunately not in my list : )
Looking around in this forum, and being a newby, I have of course a huge need for information on my Bonsai. Where can I get this?
Most important right now is &quoto I keep my Bonsai outside, even in the winter, or inside?". My first impression was that it needs to be inside, but all the posts I've read so far say to keep it outside, one even mentioned that a Bonsai will definitely die being inside.
I'm in Colorado, it's not "too" cold during the winter, but very dry all year...
Thank you for your help!

I have 2 junipers that I am keeping inside for this first winter. Most people beleive that they should be outside, and they are probably right. Some people have been able to get them to grow inside.

I am near Boulder. I am planning on putting the junipers outside in the early spring as soon as it quits freezing to give them a short rest before summer. You can see one of them in the gallery under nursery stock start.
