It makes me gloomy just by thinking about it.

Don't you like our nice gray, clammy blanket that we pull over ourselves?

Better than 100 plus degrees, and smoggy.....

I like days with no shadows. Good for taking pictures.

I actually love it, I was just joking.

I used to live in Vancouver, where half of the year is gloomy.

Beginner Species

It was suggested to me to try a Boxwood (Buxus) as an easy evergreen species for beginners. This one is a Green Velvet Boxwood and cost me $7.99CDN. So far it has survived the repotting process. The pot is actually a small aluminium frying pan minus the handle, plus some holes in the bottom and rubber feet I added.

Hi all, interesting thread.
One thing I have not seen mentioned is the definition of "beginner". I have been thinking on this and came up with three levels, none who have had experience with Bonsai:
1) successful growing a wide verity of plants, scrubs and trees. Growing from seed, transplanting, potting and pruning, etc.
2) successful growing some houseplants, flower bed and/or vegetable gardens but no experience with trees.
3) never grew or kept alive any plant.

These are not by any means perfect category's but I think reflects the different experience many of the people coming into Bonsai have. The reason for categories is for example:
Someone in cat 3 needs a tree that is very easy to take care of so it doesn't die before he/she learns some of the technique of bonsai. Whereas someone in cat 1 could be taking on trees that are more picky (like pines) and concentrate on the techniques and art of bonsai rather than on just keeping the tree alive.

I hope I expressed this well enough.

Very good thought! What is a beginner? It is amazing that this art draws people who never had any interest in growing anything except a chia pet. All the way through people who are avid green thumbs, keep orchids, or even work for or own nurserys.

More than just the word "beginner" would be useful......

Very interesting.

Having had an interest and practical involvement in growing and nurturing all sort of plants from an early age, it has never occured to me that there are obviously people who have no grounding in horticulture of any kind.

I will certainly bear this in mind when the word beginner comes up in a thread and request a litle more background info.

Walt's definitions seems a good starting point.

Regards

Mike
