First Tree

Well after about a year and a half of reading books, aticles on the net, and reading posts on bonsai forums, and as winter is starting to disappear here in Australia, I decided I should bite the bullet and get myself a tree. I had previously seen some lovely 6' high Luma apiculata going very cheaply ($25 Australian), I think because they had been there for ever and had quite a informal shape and as such probably not what most people want for their gardens (looked like they'd make great bonsai though). This genus, from what I have read, are fairly new to bonsai, but highly suited, so I was all pumped up and ready to go. Unfortinantely, somebody had come and bought all ten of them. The nursery staff were very happy at this, because they were having trouble moving them, but I wasn't quite as pleased. They still had some much less mature trees for about the same price, so I may consider one in the future. I ended up getting a Buxus sempergirens which I thought had a very interesting, and quite well developed, root structure. I believe these trees to be quite slow growing so I will probably turn it into a mame of some sort I think. I am slightly concerned with the 'greening' around the roots, is this likely to be moss? I assume whatever it is that it probably should be cleaned off, yes? Any advice on this, or on box care in general would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hi Orbit, the green looks like a bit of moss. I wouldnt worry about it too much. Get a toothbrush and give it a little rub and it should come off. They are a slow growing tree but worth the time. Hows life in Canberra going, i spent 2 years there about 20 years ago and loved it. Didnt love the cold all that much but loved Canberra just the same.
