Ficus Trunk Chopping??

Hello all,

I'm am new to bonsai and am seeking some advice regarding a variegated ficus tree I bought at a nursery.

The tree is 17" tall and i'm happy with the trunk width, but I am wanting to make it much smaller by doing a trunk chop. Shown on the diagram on the red line is where I want to make the chop.

Can anyone give me some advice redarding this procedure? as I wouldn't have a clue!

I was thinking of bringing branch 'A' up to be the leader, but I figure there's no point as a new branch would probably grow there anyway??

If all goes well hopefully a branch will grow back where I lost one at point 'B'

I live in Australia and we're just heading into Fall, when would the best time to do this be?

Thanks for any help!!

- Rich

Going into fall is not the time to trunk chop. This or most any drastic procedure on a Ficus should be done in late spring when the tree is entering it's fast growth period of the year. Where to chop depends on what kind of style you are going after with this tree. For a straight trunk you could probably chop at branch A but you'll have a hard time keeping the trunk straight and without bulges. You would be better off to get a new branch in that area and train that upward from an early age.
