Ficus defoliation and pruning
I have a ficus benjamina house plant that I decided to practice pruning and defoliation on before actually doing it to the ficus I'm training. Is this level of defoliation appropriate? Too much, too little? I'm mainly trying to get more branching and smaller leaves from this.

I happen to be from Western PA too, neighbor - Portersville.
My ficii (including my Golden Gate, Ginseng & Too-Little) have not gone through a defoliation process. However I have both read and seen several that have gone through a complete defoliation. With adequate light and humidity the leaves did return. In your case it might be possible acclimatize the one you are training outdoors facing north (but with complete shade from direct sunlight) in attempts to speed up the return of leaves.
