Ficus Cutting

(Please redirect me if this question has already been answered elsewhere; I did a search on the site but didn't come up with anything.)

I stuck a cutting from my ficus retusa into a glass of water a couple of weeks ago, and it's starting to get little bumpy things on the bottom which I presume (hope!) will be roots.

My question is, how big should the roots be before I plant it, and what particular care, if any, should I take when planting?

Hope this isn't too dumb a question!! Thanks for your help.

ficus cutting

Hi there Vermontoise, ficus make great little bonsai, ( or big bonsai for that matter), they take root easily from cuttings, they are very hardy, here are some pics of a cutting that I planted twelve months ago, as soon as it had a few little white roots on on it I trained it to wrap around a rock.

Sometimes the sap in water makes weird bubbles that can be confused with roots. It comes out of the bark under water and looks like little puffs of white.

Treenut, what a great little tree! I don't know if it's "appropriate", but I'm going to bring back a few rocks from Maine this summer - the striations are beautiful, and I'd love to try doing some root-over-rock with them.

But I'm worried that my "roots" are indeed those weird little sap bubbles that LivingArt mentioned... Only a day or so will tell. Unless someone has some wise advice as to a better way to go about this?
