Fertilizer can burn roots and cause them to die and eventually rot if applied at the wrong time or in the wrong proportions.
We need more info: What kind of tree, where is it growing, for how long, how much light does it get, how and when do you water, what is the NPK ratio of your fertilizer? |

If you do a search of fertilizer (on Bonsai Talk) you will find a ton of great information. For more that you want to ever know (or smell) look for Bonsaial's discussion of his stinky back yard. I think it is a great distillation of a well balanced fertilizer and watering program.
