european larch, some yellow foliage

hey there,

My English/european larch has started to get yellowy/golden foliage

I recently moved to wales (from England) and its much wetter here and i'm just wondering if the extra water could be causing the miss coloured foliage, or do larch's change colour in winter? Iv only had it since the summer, its very large and has new growth which looks healthy! just small parts are changing colour!

could it even be to do with the nurients? its root ball is in normal compost and then it is surrounded by pure akadama which all the new roots have grown into, i normaly feed this part of the soil with diluted nutrients every week, sometimes twice a week!

any suggestions will be greatly apreciated

thanks

Hi Andy,

The larch is a deciduous conifer, and so will lose its leaves come winter. Nothing to worry about at all.

All the best,

Aaron

And you might want to stop feeding it when it goes dormant.

By the way, when you say "normal compost", has this been screened to remove all the fine particles? If it hasn't, you will do well to wash this out of the middle of the rootball come next repot, otherwise you are inviting root rot to develop, especially with the very wet Welsh weather.

All the best,

Aaron

I'm not sure, as i said it was given to me by a man in my area, he was an expert and had hundreds of show quality trees so i would imagine it had all the needed screening ect, but he had to quickly re pot it before giving it to me, which explains why the main root ball is mostly in soil and he added akadama as he re potted it.

He said to re pot it in the new year so i shall make sure i spend time getting rid of the un wanted "normal" soil, for now i might give the pot some protection from the rain just incase!
