Eugenia Dropping Leaves
About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a Eugenia Myrtifolia (Brush Cherry). I did some modest root pruning when I potted it, but it has been dropping leaves. I looked online in a couple different places and I couldn't really find anything. I am keeping the soil adequately watered, and the tree is getting good sunlight in my living room (I am in massachusetts, so it is already cold outside). My living room has 3 large bay windows that flood the house with ample light.
Could the root pruning be why it is dropping leaves? Is this normal? The tree isn't bald, but I don't like seeing leaves on my carpet. Help! Here is a picture too. |

J Dub, being from mass, i feel your pain when keeping trees indoors for the winter. sounds to me like you're tree is in shock from moving and root pruning, perfectly normal. keep an eye out for bugs to ensure they are not the cause. only water when needed (can't stress that enough), with freshly pruned roots and a tree in shock, a lot of water can/will cause root rot pretty quickly (in my expierience anyway). and NO FERTILIZER!! its a little late here for root pruning, but you can make it successfully. keep an eye on the watering, and in a few weeks, your tree should stabilize if not start to recover from what i believe you will find is just a case of shock. it can be done
. where in mass are you btw? i'm in norton. chris

Hey Chris,
Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but wasn't sure. There aren't any bugs that I can see. I have been on the lookout for those. I also have a fan going in my living room almost all day to create some air circulation for my trees so the water is either used by the tree or evaporated. I will be sure not to over water it. I live in Malden, MA. That's cool you are in Norton. Do you ever take classes anywhere? I have taken a couple of classes at Bonsai West in Littleton. Have you been there? Jeff |
