Chop And Report?

Good day, all. And thank you in advance for listening and offering advice.

I've got three amur maples, planted in largish (2gal?) terra cotta pots about two years ago. Repotted two of them today into much better draining soil; I think the old soil was breaking down 'cause it was packed around the roots pretty well. Speaking of roots, both plants were pretty well bound up in the pots. So I trimmed the tap roots and other too-large roots, but tried to leave the remaining feeder roots alone. I'd still like for these trees to grow vigorously for another year or two.

The third tree I trunk chopped. But I know that if the other two need repotting so does the third. Can I do that now that I've chopped it? The buds were barely starting to open on all three, so I figure I'm just in time and/or still have a little bit of time.

I live in southwest Montana, fyi, and while we're pretty much through the worst of winter we've still got a high chance of freezes and possible snow.

Thank you again for your help.

I don't understand you exactly. You repotted two of the three today?
>Repotted two of them today into much better draining soil;

and want to repot them again? or are you talking about different trees?

>The third tree I trunk chopped. But I know that if the other two need repotting so does the third. Can I do that now

Anyway, wait until you are sure the freezes are over before you start repotting. Anything you've repotted (if you have indeed repotted anything) will need to be protected from hard frosts and freezes, snow, etc., until spring hits your neck of the woods.

Regards,

Matt

Chop and REPOT

First, sorry about the subject line type. Repot, not report...

Sorry about the confusion below. Maybe this helps?
Tree #1: Repotted on Monday.
Tree #2: Repotted on Monday.
Tree #3: Trunk-chopped on Monday. Can I repot it now, too, or is it already too stressed?

Thank you for the advice regarding freezing. I can move them so they are better protected. My understanding is that trees need to be repotted before bud-burst, so that's why I did it now. Here in Bozeman, we have freeze potential even into May/June, but I know I can't wait that long to repot.

Thanks again.

You could go ahead and repot the third one that you trunk chopped. Any roots you damage or prune will leave the tree with less energy to push new buds though. So you'll probably get less back budding than if you left it be. I guess it depends on what you are expecting from the chop and why you need to repot. If the soil is causing ill health to the tree then by all means repot now.
