In the UK some years a chinese elm will drop leaves, other years it won't. Depends on the weather conditions. Leave it outside all winter, the shaded area you talk about sounds good. Don't worry about 'insulating' it - it should be fine. I just leave mine on the benches all year round, though I'm a bit further south than you.
