Question Chinese Elm leaves - PLZ HELP!!!

When i first bought it, the most leaves were darkgreen and a bit shiny. But now i got the tree a while they are looking more lightgreen and less shiny. It looks nice though but i want to know if it's something bad or it's nothing to worry about. And if it's bad what should i do to get the leaves to be as they should be?

hi there

Please dont freak out, its not going to die overnight. Sometimes it takes a while for someone here to post a reply.

I have chinese elms too (I live in a warm part of australia that is quite dry) some of them have glossy green leaves and some have lighter coloured leaves, some have both on the same tree. Some of my elms drop all their leaves for winter - some hold them all and others drop leaves all year round. New leaves grow in lighter in colour than older leaves.

If your tree is kept inside, maybe the leaves arent getting enough light, do they seem to be growing bigger and maybe not as many? It could also be a watering problem, too much or not enough, or just that the air is not humid enough, but usually the leaves will crisp and drop off if the tree dries out.

Id say you are keeping the tree indoors, but i maybe wrong. I really dont know anything about keeping bonsai indoors as mine are all outdoors, id assume chinese elm is an outdoor tree. If the leaves arent crisp and falling off and it still grows new ones, id say its ajusting to its new environment.

If its kept outdoors, it might be something else

someone with a lot more knowledge will reply soon im sure...

Cheers

juliet

Do believe that not every question here gets answered in 24 hours. There are a few tools you can use in the meantime.

1. The FAQ
2. THe Search Facility
3. The Ask Dr. Bonsai Robot on the startpage

Please begin by searching on "yellow leaves" or reading the faq on watering. The vast majority of tree problems are caused by improper watering and keeping the wrong plants indoors.

In the event you are watering properly and have the plant outdoors and are still having problems, please answer the following questions:

1. What kind of bonsai do you have and how long have you had it?

2. Where did you get it, and what was its condition at the time you acquired it?

3. When did you notice the problem?

4. How have you been watering it and how frequently?

5. What region are you located geographically and where are you keeping your tree, indoors or out, full sun, part sun, shade?

6. Does the soil have any unpleasant odor?

7. When was the tree last repotted?

8. Is there any discoloration of the foliage? Would you describe it as turgid and green, dry and brown, wilting, mottled or partially eaten? If you brush the foliage with a fingertip, does it fall off?

9. Is there evidence of pests, like ants or aphids?

10. Can you post a picture of your tree to the forum?

1. What kind of bonsai do you have and how long have you had it?

chinese elm, about 2 weeks

2. Where did you get it, and what was its condition at the time you acquired it?

garden centre, at that time it still had darkgreen glossy leaves

3. When did you notice the problem?

when the time runs by i could see the leaves getting lighter and lighter and more crispy

4. How have you been watering it and how frequently?

i've been watering every day. when i water i use a waterspray you know such thingie.(excuse me mi dutch ) and i spray the leaves from the top and then the soil. then i wait for 10 mins and spray the soil again.

5. What region are you located geographically and where are you keeping your tree, indoors or out, full sun, part sun, shade?

As you know the netherlands, ever been there? well then you should know the sun doesnt shine here very often. But im lucky it's summer now. I keep it indoors wher it should catch full sun but the balcony of the neighbours hangs over my room window and if the sun hangs high it's mayb not getting direct sunlight. My room window is located to the south tough.

6. Does the soil have any unpleasant odor?

No it's smells great like forests when i water it and during the day it doesnt smell bad either.

7. When was the tree last repotted?

I haven't repotted it since i have it.

8. Is there any discoloration of the foliage? Would you describe it as turgid and green, dry and brown, wilting, mottled or partially eaten? If you brush the foliage with a fingertip, does it fall off?

As i said the leaves are getting lighter and crispier.

9. Is there evidence of pests, like ants or aphids?

Not that i know

10. Can you post a picture of your tree to the forum?

I have added a zoom on my leaves. hope you guys see it cuz i make the pics with a webcam.

aw btw i can see some new smal leaves but they are crispy too so i dont think they can get bigger and will soon drop off.
But as i move my hand over the leaves they dont seem to fall off except some really dirt crispy ones.
