Tips:5¢ Advice:Free

This particular species is among those that is rather hard to work with. LIke a juniper, you really can't cut the foliage anywhere without it going brown on you, so you have to scissor it where it is twiggy (lignified). You get one or two strong pushes of foliage each year and that's the opportunity to pinch it back. It doesn't bud easily from older wood.
I have one in the Gallery, but I sometimes wonder if it's worth the work! Regards, Matt http://pictures.bonsaitalk.com/key/pisifera

Master-S-T,
Thank you for the kind words and advice. I'm hoping the tree will recover from my clumsy fumblings over the next few years (instead of deciding to die )Carl, If I might I'd like to pick your brain again. Would you point out a mistake or so that I have avoided so that I can continue to do so? Also, I have found a class to I plan to register for and I am planning to join my area club in March (if they'll accept my application )Thank you for the wonderful advice. Treebay, As of right now I think the foliage on this tree is too beautiful, because of it's color and texture, to give up. I do have a little juniper and acer (bloodgood japanese maple?) that are growing on. I also plan to attempt to style some collected Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of sharon) I don't know about styling these but I can't seem to kill them in my back yard. I've also started some different seeds and cuttings, under grow lights, that I plan to put outside come spring. I'll probably continue to try different trees until my wife says, "that's enough" then I'll have to find some way to get her into the artform! BTW, is this spring too soon for a root prune and training pot on the BLVD Cypress? or if it's healthy I should go for it?

I think the thing that impressed me the most was that you didn't over-work the tree and try to go from big nursery plant to instant-finished-bonsai in one step. When I started, I tended to take off way too much foliage and ended up with something like looked a like a cross between the waste pile behind a sawmill, and a drowned rat. Also, the tree usually died. Probably a blessing in disguise. ![]() Springtime would be ideal for repotting. Be sure to move it into a well-draining soil. With my best regards, Carl
