Carmona question

My question is: What's the ideal temperature for a Fukien tea ?

I know whats's the minimum, but what's the maximum ?

Another question: The branches and leaves grow only on one side of my bonsai. Is this normal ?
How could I grow a branch on the other side, is it possible ?

I'm looking forward to your replies.

Re: Carmona question

Hi Daniel

Fukien tea has been grown in the southwest US, and can withstand some heat. How much would depend on whether the watering was adequate and if the root ball temperature was extreme as well.

There is some information on this species in the BCI Index under Carmona

As far as inducing branches to grow where they are not... This is a common problem for bonsai growers. Healthy plants, particularly when they are young, will respond to pinching and pruning by budding back, or activating dormant buds along branches and trunk.

Be sure to remove those buds that are not in good positions. This will help favor the buds you do want to develop and grow. Bad positions would include near or inside existing branch forks, right on top of existing branches, buds considered "too low" on the trunk to contribute to the bonsai design, or other buds in areas that are too dense already.

Buds may be removed by rubbing with a fingertip or scratching away with a nail while they are still succulent.

Welcome to the forum!

Regards,

Matt

Re: Carmona question

I'm only a beginner but here goes:

This is from the BCI Species guide at
http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/fukien.html

"Temperature: Ehretia prefers temperatures between 60-72F in winter, although occasional dips into the forties produce no ill effects. In the summer, most books recommend protection from extreme heat, although the plant has been successfully grown in sweltering Texas weather. Ehretia does not like draughts." Also, they should only have one hours direct sunlight per day.

It's not normal - do you turn the tree so each side gets equal light? It sounds like one side has died off due to lack of light. Hope that helps!

Re: Carmona question

Daniel,
My son works for a bonsai retailer, in his greenhouse. In the summer temperatures reach 110 degrees. The Fukien teas love it, but he is watering tons also and creating hot moist enviroment. The tropicals grow super fast.
In dry conditions I have 95-100 degrees(F) full sun off and on in summer and it is not a problem, as long as the tree is conditioned to it all growing season.
You have to be diligent with watering!!!

Re: Carmona question

Dan, I think that was humor or sarcasm, ya know a joke.

Just give that puppy lots of sun, water, fresh air and fertilizer and you will get plenty of new growth on the bare side to work with in the coming growing season
