Boxwood question

Hi,

I recently found this little boxwood. I did a little pruning and wiring and would like to pot it in spring. I have two questions :
* What would you do if it was your boxwood ? I like it like it is, but maybe it would look better with a single stem ?
* To pot this, I would have to prune away at least 50% of the roots. It it wise to do this at once, or do it in two stages ??

regards, René

Re: Boxwood question

I expect you will find that this boxwood, like most, has a very fibrous root system. You should not have difficulty in removing 50% of the soil volume provided you also thin at least 50% of the foliage.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Boxwood question

Hi Rene, Just looking at the two dimensional picture, it would be hard to style this tree any other way than a broom style. I would maybe virtually remove the two lowest branches and see what that does. Then prune and pinch into the traditional broom shape. Rounded ball. Regards Bonsaial

Re: Boxwood question

Gosh, that tree does look like it wants to be a broom style but that thick center trunk just doesn't seem to go well. I would consider making it a long term project and chopping it to a new leader, maybe that first branch on the left. Turn the pot around a few more times and you may find a better front.

Re: Boxwood question

Thanks for your replies,

The problem is that the picture doesn't do the tree justice. That's because I use a cheap digital camera. I should buy a better one but the price of these things is keeping me from doing it . I made two virtuals. The first is without the lowest two branches :

Re: Boxwood question

And in the second one I removed some more branches from the bottom. Do you think this is better ??

Re: Boxwood question

Hi Rene, I like the second one better. The trunk looks like it has a little reverse taper right at the base of the trunk. Regards, Bonsaial

Re: Boxwood question

Al,

I think I made the reverse taper while "virtualing"... I will put this tree in front of me and stare at it for an hour or two. That's what I usually do before making this sort of changes. I agree that it looks better without the bottom branches. Thanks for the input,

René

Re: Boxwood question

Don't be in a big hurry as boxwoods grow so slow. as you can see this varity of boxwood wants to grow long strait limbs. You can increase ramification by cutting the foliage back to the first set of leaves you will get a new bud at the base of each leaf if you leave several leaves on a limb you will get buds on the last set of leaves on the limb. The harder you pinch this tree the tighter your ramification will be.
