Thanks,

Man you've been a big help. There is a Ted Matson Work shop next month in my area; maybe I will take the tree to it. But Thanks to you and Jim I'm beginning to have a different image of this plants future. So no lime sulfur should be used on this type of carving?

Thanks, pootsie
Thats why I had to have this one. I feel in love with the trunk the second I saw it.

Thats not true!, I have learned how and have seen the fine results of boxwoods in all sizes being bent and curved right here on this very forum. You just have to take the time to learn how to handle the species.

Well, yeah, it kind of is true if you haven't worked a large one before and don't have any more to learn on. I would be very hesitant to tell someone looking for first time advice to "go ahead, I've seen it done" on a specimen level tree like this one. It can be done, but it ain't easy and can be dangerous. Perhaps the workshop could also lend a hand there too.

I have worked with older boxwood and know that there are specific dangers in bending big branches and/or wiring them. And the bigger the branch, the less inclined it will be to bend and remain bent. If you do it too roughly or try to shift wire on a branch, the wire can strip cambium completely off the branch and kill it.

In any case, the jin wouldn't benefit much from such treatment. It doesn't really go with the tree.

Maybe your to ruff on trees, also it sounds like you are using bare wire in a "bonsai" manner. Dropping the branches with strong guy wires over time, then use wrapping, brace wires, wrapping again, then your standard "bonsai" wiring to add movement to the branches. Those that are doing the best with this are repeating the process slowly until the job is done. I have been learning about this straight since I arrived here and I have seen old urban yamadori turned into a beautiful thing.

Here is a thread that a couple of examples with pics and some quality how to of this practice in play.

The limbs on this plant are easily bendable. They haven't lignified yet. That's not the issue. You're missing what the aim of this particular post is and just taking aim me, not the tree. You are correct--boxwood can be bent-I'm admit it. I'm an idiot. Can we move on now?

Take another look AT THIS TREE. The secondary trunk on this plant is an unlikely candidate to be bent with guy wires, or much else short of hollowing out the middle of the trunk and then bending it.

"Dropping" branches is not the same as forcing shape into a thick trunk.

How would YOU bend that secondary or primary trunk?

Rockm,

I'm looking through this thread and fail to see where I attacked you or said you were an idiot, but now I think you are starting to act like one. And yes I could bend those top half trunk sections you keep crying about.
