I have just bought a Bougainvillea hoping to train it as bonsai.
My question is that now the Bougainvillea is blowsoming red flowers and is about 1 meter high, the trunk is still very think less than 1cm thik. how should I start 1) should I remove all flowers? 2) should I chop it now or put it in a training pot? 3) should I tim branches for the trunk to grow thick faster? 4) does the Bougainvillea like acid soil like azalea? Thanks again for helping a newbie Last edited by akhater : 24-Nov-2004 at 11:36 AM. |

Hi Akhater,
1-2 Difficult to answer without a picture. I won't try. 3. Trimming branches won't make the trunk thicken more. It would have the opposite effect. Trimming branches could be used to help balance the thickening, or imbalance it to create more thickening at the base and less at the top, or vice-versa. 4. You want well drained, acidic soil with much more light exposure than you'd probably give an azalea. Regards, Matt

bougainvillea question
Hi Akhater
The experience i have had from bougie's at the moment is mostly in the garden and not as a bonsai. The prefer less water to your average plant. When they think they are in a drought, they produce more flowers. sadistic little plant really, work on starvation principles. During winter, they seem to cope really well with the winter rainfall we have here. As a bonsai I can't really say when to prune or work on them. In the garden, the more you trim it the more it grows. But then by that stage they have reached thickness and full height. We have found here in SA that there are certain species of Bougie's that tend to overnight drop all their leave and flowers. Then in about 2 days time you see new leaves shooting. weird and definitely not for the faint hearted. I did the panic thing when that happened to mine and i have not even worked on it yet. Hope that helps. good luck and send a pic when you get it going. ![]() |
