Re: Bonsai Soil Mixture?
It depends. What kind of tree ? I allways use a mix of Akadama and Kiriyu. Sometimes with some Fuji sand. And for Azalea's 100% Kanuma.

Re: Bonsai Soil Mixture?
Actually i was looking for something general. Somethign I could use most if not all trees. Though since you asked. Im going to be growing a cuban royal palm, redwood, and a african upside down tree.
Thanks!

Re: Bonsai Soil Mixture?
Redwood seems to like a constant level of fairly moist soil. Not talking soggy here, just pleasantly damp. It grows in cool coastal areas and that's what it's adapted to.
Your palm on the other hand expects instant drainage. I have planted palms in basically 100% sand or a mix of sand and pumice and had good results. I water every day most days spring through summer, so I need to adapt the trees somewhat to a soil that isn't going to hold too much water on the trees that can't take it. If you use the same soil on all your trees, you may find that some dry out sooner and others stay wet too long. This all depends on what you're growing and where. But I suspect, in Florida, you will need a richer soil mix on a redwood than you would use on your palms. I have no experience with the African trees, but I would lean toward a very free draining soil for them. Regards, Matt
